Often our most shameful experiences are tied to the moments when we have been the neediest. When we were prepared to sell our shoes for love. When we hungered for connection and they did not want a remedy for their cold feet. Shame takes our hand; walks us home. Slips the noose of its grip around our wrists; never waits for our permission. Forceful. Suffocating. The kind of remembering that we want to forget. It tells us that love is blind because shame is all we are meant to see. When connection becomes synonymous for electrocution; when our hearts are fallen power lines and our minds the lightening. When it pains too much to forgive them. When it pains too much to forgive ourselves. When we forget that I love you is a statement alone; needs not to begin or end with I’m sorry. When we forget that we were born to be human, not apologies.
Say it before you run out of time. Say it before it’s too late. Say what you’re feeling. Waiting is a mistake.
